         GOING GREEN MEANS-SAVING GREEN!

Title 20:

January 1, 2008
is the effective date for swimming pool pumps under the terms of TITLE 20.

In summary, the total horsepower of a primary residential filtration pump MUST NOT EXCEED a total of one horsepower without being a two-speed pump. AND, there must be a means to control both speeds with the default speed being the low speed.

Title 20 DOES NOT apply to motor replacements. It DOES apply to the purchase of a new pump. There is a current consideration under way to require motor replacements to comply with Title 20. It does make sense to install a single speed motor when the standard is now 2-speed. The implementation of smart meter technology will soon make a single speed motor a choice to spend more money in operating costs.

As most pools run on a single-speed pump, the typical upgrade at time of replacement will require a two-speed or variable-speed version along with a replacement time clock that will control both speeds. If the pool is under automated controls, additional hardware and programming will be needed to satisfy the controls standard of TITLE 20.
